Large Language Models are evolving at an unprecedented pace. As of Feb 28, 2025 the Clauce 3.5 Haiku model has been tested to support different languages with different levels of proficiency.
Anthropic’s documentation states that the Claude 3.5 Haiku has varying levels of proficiency across different languages.
- Higher Proficiency Languages (where it performs well, with strong fluency and understanding): 10+ languages, including:
- English (best performance)
- French
- Spanish
- German
- Portuguese
- Italian
- Dutch
- Russian
- Chinese (Simplified and Traditional)
- Japanese
- Serviceable Languages (where it can handle simple questions but with limitations in grammar, depth, or complex reasoning): Up to 100 languages, covering a wide range of European, Asian, and some African languages.
While Claude 3.5 Haiku is strongest in English and major global languages, it can still provide basic responses in many others, though accuracy and fluency decrease as the language becomes less commonly supported.
A recent independent studies by TransSphere* have counted high proficiency as high as 16 languages, 17 with low-resource support, and 4 with very-low-resource support.
